During the initial setup, you can register your NAS with Synology. Remote access is excellent thanks to the built-in QuickConnect service. Some NAS boxes, such as the Western Digital My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 ($529.99 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) and the QNAP TVS-168 ( at Amazon) (Opens in a new window), come with some or all of these services preloaded and ready to use, but this à la carte approach keeps things simple. It works like an app store, so you can add a DLNA-compatible media server, download management tools (including BitTorrent, FTP, and so on), photo and music libraries, cloud sync functionality, note server, surveillance camera recording, iTunes server, Plex server, antivirus protection, and many other services to the NAS. As a result, the NAS stores up to 5.4TB (formatted), but the files you store will be protected from single-drive failure. We installed two 6TB Hitachi Deskstar NAS drives (approximately $250 each), and the DS216j defaulted to formatting them in a RAID Level 1 (mirroring) array. The NAS is sold diskless for a lower purchase price, and to give you flexibility when choosing how much storage you ultimately want to pay for.

Downloadable apps give it plenty of extra functionality like personal cloud syncing, multimedia services, and security camera recording, though you'll have to install each service separately. After you set it up with a couple of internal drives, it's ready to serve files over both your home network and the Internet.
